Always measure all four sides of the space where the mat will go, because walls and door frames are not always perfectly straight. If the spot has corners or an irregular shape, measure the maximum length and width of the recess. That way you can have the mat cut slightly larger and trim the corners yourself later, so it covers the space completely.

Think carefully about where the mat will lie and how the space is used. A mat at the front door has to cope with far more dirt and moisture than one in the hallway. Pay attention to the floor as well: on vinyl or poured floors a plasticiser-free mat is important to prevent discolouration, while on a stone floor a standard anti-slip backing is enough. In a busy household or in wet weather, a mat with strong fibres and high water absorption is the best choice. Finally, pick the right type: a moisture-absorbing mat for damp, a dirt-trapping mat for dirt, or a combination of both.
