How do you maintain your doormat?
Doormats: they might be quiet, but these unsung heroes collect dust, sand, rain, mud, and the occasional stray French fry every day (we don't judge). So they deserve a little love—and luckily, it doesn't have to be difficult. In this blog post, you'll discover how to easily and effectively keep your doormat clean, whether you have a doormat, coir mat, or rubber outdoor mat.
1. Shake, don't save
A quick and efficient way to freshen up your doormat: just give it a good shake. Do this weekly, preferably, and more often if you get a lot of foot traffic. Hang it outside, give it a few good knocks against a wall or post, and that accumulated dirt is gone.
2. Vacuuming = love
Especially for dry-cleaning and entrance mats, vacuuming is your best friend. Use a powerful vacuum cleaner (with a brush setting for textiles) and vacuum the mat both horizontally and vertically. This tackles both loose and deeper dirt. Tip: turn it over sometimes – dust and sand also settle on the underside.
3. Washing (but only if allowed)
Check the care label or product page (like this washable doormat ) – some doormats are machine washable. Use a low temperature (30°C) and then let the mat dry flat . Never tumble dry – unless explicitly stated otherwise – otherwise you'll end up with a misshapen mat that even your dog won't put its paw on.
4. Coconut mats? Keep dry!
A coconut mat is durable and sturdy, but it hates getting wet. So make sure you use this classic mat indoors or under cover. To maintain it: vacuum or shake it out, and gently brush any stains with a dry brush.
5. Rubber outdoor mats: water is your weapon
Rubber doormats (like the Outdoor King ) are designed for outdoor use. Simply clean them with a garden hose—or, for the more discerning, with a pressure washer. Then let the mat dry thoroughly in the sun (it won't complain about UV rays).
6. Pro tip: vary with the seasons
Do you have multiple doormats? Consider a "summer and winter mat." In winter, you'll want an extra absorbent mat for wet shoes, while in summer, a more airy option is often sufficient. This way, each mat will last longer.
Finally: a fresh mat = a fresh entrance
Proper maintenance extends the life of your mat and keeps your entrance neat, clean, and stylish. And let's be honest: who doesn't want a clean welcome after a long day at work?
